This rule slightly ups the heroics and is a lot of fun for the group. When a player character draws a Serpent card (marked with an X) during initiative, he receives one Fate chip to use at any time thereafter, and is considered to be on Hold from the beginning of initiative. Because characters can now gain Fate during combat, characters begin the game session with only two free Fate.
